Well here it is Sunday again and another electrifying Senior Center Column has gone to press and has a comfy home in the Shawnee News-Star. I’m pretty sure that you are all aware that this column is written and submitted to the paper before Sunday, but just in case you are unaware as to exactly how early that has to be done – it’s Thursday morning and I am writing it at my computer now.

Because it is Thursday morning I obviously cannot tell you about the Heart, Mind, Body and Soul Health Fair we had on Friday. But I’m gonna guess it was well received by everyone who came and everyone who came found information there that they needed and enjoyed the many agencies, organizations and groups that were there. The Senior Center’s Booth had all kinds of information about the happenings going on. Sooooo, if you went, thank you for coming. If you couldn’t make it on Friday we hope you will come in and check us out for yourself. Come in anytime from 8 to 5, you’re always welcome!!

By the way, if you were there and you “snuck” in from Tecumseh or Meeker or Seminole or some other area that’s not named Shawnee, it’s okay, I won’t tell a soul.

Now back to the happenings at the Senior Center. It is now November and, as I hope you all remember, Creative Crafts with Bobbie Doss is on the schedule once again. This month Bobbie will be working with acrylics in her class. That means you have all the fun of painting those scenes you would like to see hanging in your house or office and having your name or initials on the corner by the frame. Bobbie will help you make your painting the best that you can do and one you will be proud to display. Remember there is no charge to participate in this class or any of Bobbie’s classes at the Center and most materials needed are provided, again, at no cost. Her class runs on the first and second Mondays of the month (that’s November 6 and 13) and last from 1:30 in the afternoon until 3:30 or whenever you finish what you are making. Examples of what her classes have achieved can be seen around the Craft Room and throughout the Center. So, come in, check it out and spend some time working in an art medium you never would have considered and chatting with people you might never have met.

Now that I am on the “what we have at the Center” theme let me remind you of several other things I’ve mentioned before but perhaps you may not remember. With the whole “Blue Zones” thingy out there with the healthier, happier people theme, how about checking out those fitness classes that can help you become one of those healthier, happier people. Once again there is no charge for the fitness classes and they are given conveniently in the mornings and evenings. TaiChi is definitely the class for those of you who want to ease into a fitness schedule. It’s held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30. TaiChi is kinda like yoga but not as stressful so it’s perfect for those of us who are not “health buffs” and want to work slowly up to being one. It’s beautiful to watch a tai chi class working through the slow movements (with strange names like “needle at the bottom of the sea”, “part the wild horse’s mane” and the “single whip”). It’s even more fun to be one of those out on the floor doing those beautiful movements.

As I have mentioned before our TaiChi instructor is Sharon Autrey and she is an accredited instructor. She is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She will tell you from the beginning “do what you can do and let the music and the movements flow”. And as slow and easy as it may seem to work through one of her 60 minute sessions (there is a short break in the middle for water and conversation) you will find you are getting stronger and your ability to catch yourself before you fall will also be getting stronger and stronger. I know this to be true. Before I moved back to Shawnee I would fall every time I worked in my yard and I worked in my yard alot. And now, almost 6 years later, I can honestly say I have fallen twice.....and even though I fell it was an easy fall. (If you’ve never fallen you won’t understand that last sentence.) I could probably go on for another long paragraph but, to be honest, the only way you are going to truly understand TaiChi and how it can help you to be a happier, healthier person is to try it for yourself. Give TaiChi and our instructor a chance to help you become the best senior citizen person you can be.

Kate Joyce will once again be joining “Mike in the Morning” on KGFF Radio (FH 100.9 and AM 1450) on Wednesday morning, November 8th to give you their combined opinion of what goes on at the Shawnee Senior Center. I may work at the Center but I always hear something new when I listen.

And remember at the Shawnee Senior Center “Age is just a number”. The website is SHAWNEESENIORS.ORG and our Facebook page is Shawnee Senior Center.

See you at the center!
