An investigation is underway for the vandals who toppled 20 gravestones and damaged 14 vases at a local cemetery.

Joey Young, supervisor at Fairview Cemetery, said Shawnee police are investigating the incident, which occurred after 5 p.m. Thursday and before 8 a.m. Friday.

“It's heart wrenching,” Young said about the damage.

Located at 1400 N. Center, the cemetery, commissioned in 1897, consists of 80 acres.

A similar vandalism incident occurred over the summer and Young said he estimates that about 200 gravestones have been toppled or damaged at the cemetery since July.

He asks local residents, especially those who live on the east side of the cemetery or drive along Center Street, to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity in the cemetery and report it to police, 273-2121.

Anyone with questions for Young can call him at 878-1529.
