Estell Wood, 100, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at her home.

Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Garden Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Garden Grove Cemetery.

Estell was born March 23, 1917, in Canyon, Texas, to George Washington Chesser and Ida May Medlin Chesser. She was the youngest of ten children.

Estell married Vernon William Clemence April 28, 1934. They had two daughters, Betty Lou and Patsy Sue.

She was a member of Garden Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk and Tiny Tots Sunday School teacher for many years.

Estell and Vernon ran a grocery store in Shawnee before moving to the country when he began road construction and farming. Estell was a homemaker who gardened and preserved what she grew, crocheted and sewed for herself and the whole family. Her creations were always treasured gifts!

After Vernon’s death Aug. 16, 1961, Estell began to find ways to fill her time. She served as a volunteer “Pink Lady” at Shawnee Regional Hospital and began working at Sperry’s Jewelers. She also began to travel, visiting various places around the United States and the world. She would travel with friends, or at times with strangers who would call and ask her to share a room. She was fearless and told of a time her tour bus left her at one stop in Jerusalem, and she caught a ride to the next check-in point with a total stranger who offered her a ride. What upset her most about the whole ordeal was that she missed seeing Jacob’s Well!

She married Robert Wood Sept. 19, 1987, and moved with him to his farm near Meeker. There she began to help him with orphaned calves, driving a tractor, and other various duties required on a working ranch. She and Robert continued to live and work there independently until about 2016 when they could no longer manage physically. Robert preceded her in death Nov. 27, 2016.

She is survived by daughters Betty (Clemence) and Bobby Denney of Prague, and Pat (Clemence) and Dean Denney of Shawnee, Grandchildren Charme’ (Denney) and Donnie McCabe of Prague, Tracy (Denney) and Jack Smith of Shawnee, Barry (Rusty) and Susie Denney of Meeker and Michael (Mike) and Leah Denney of Prague, nine great-grandchildren, 28 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was also grandma to Robert’s family, whom she loved dearly, including Robert Lee and Barbara Wood of Meeker, Gene and Debbie Wood of Elmore City, Susie (Wood) and Rusty Denney and Nancy (Wood) and Larry Bradley all of Meeker, 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
