SHAWNEE – Macomb was unable to keep pace with Wellston, losing 6521 in the first round of the Pottawatomie County Invitational Monday evening.

Wellston ended the first quarter on a 12-0 run and held the lead the rest of the game.

The lone bright spot for the Lady Hornets was freshman Mariah Carolina, who scored 10 of her team’s 14 first half points. Carolina knocked down two treys in the first half and scored Macomb’s first 10 points.

The Lady Tigers were led by Cierra Johnson, who scored nine points in the first half.

Wellston led 28-14 at the break.

Wellston continued their dominance in the second half as they went on a 24-4 run in the third, extending the lead to 52-18.

Macomb’s first basket of the second half came with 1:40 left in the third when Ashton Powell grabbed a rebound and scored on the putback.

Carolina knocked down a three-pointer with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter, scoring Macomb’s only basket in the last frame.

Carolina led Macomb with 13 points. Powell scored three points and MaeLee Hancock added two points.

Wellston was led by Cierra Johnson and Madison Funk who both scored 15 points. Ashlynn Wallace joined them in double figures with 10.

Macomb will face Earlsboro Friday at 7 p.m. Wellston advances and will take on Allen Thursday at 4 p.m.
