JONES — A back-and-forth battle at the Jones Tournament went to Tecumseh, 57-51 over Perkins-Tryon, in an opening-round matchup Thursday afternoon.

Tecumseh led 12-4 early but the Demons, off a 9-0 run, held a 13-12 advantage after one quarter.

Down 30-28 at the half, Perkins-Tryon started the second half with a 5-0 run, only to see Tecumseh rebound and lead by as many as 11 points. Perkins-Tryon didn’t get closer than the final six-point spread.

“It was a game of spurts,” Tecumseh coach Eric Litherland said. “It was a good win.”

Ryan Fullbright and Anthony Billy shared Tecumseh scoring honors with 11. Jayden Shafer collected 9 points, including two treys. All of his points came in the second half.

Savage Josiah Mendoza hit a 3-pointer at the third quarter buzzer.

Zathan Bowman of Tecumseh led all players with 10 assists to go along with 8 points.

Kameron Permetter chipped in with 9 points for the Savages.

Tecumseh (9-6) advances to a 4:40 semifinal test today against Bethel.

Girls

A disastrous second quarter was too much for Tecumseh (3-11) to overcome in a 73-37 setback to Cushing at Jones.

Down just 15-12 after one quarter, the Lady Savages were outscored 23-2 over the next eight minutes.

Braelyn Berlowitz and Katelyn Carrier led Cushing with 16 and 15 points respectively. All of Carrier’s points came on five 3-point field goals.

Tecumseh’s scoring was led by Courtney Mansell with 9 and Annie Boatman with 8.

Tecumseh held an early 12-5 lead.

Coach Matt Thornton’s squad drops into today’s 10 a.m. consolation bracket against Thursday’s Jones-John Marshall loser.
