Shawnee Fire Department (SFD) Chaplain Lt. Jim Ogle was awarded the VFW Post 1317 Firefighter of the Year Saturday.

The award is presented to a candidate that demonstrates excellence in the performance of their duties and consistent dedication to their official responsibilities over a period of years with continuous growth in responsibilities and skills in their profession. Ogle began his career with the SFD in 1996 as a firefighter and now serves as a lieutenant and chaplain. “Ogle is a vital member of our department who has consistently volunteered to perform additional duties that provide critical service to our community and department members throughout his 22-year career with our department,” Fire Chief Dru Tischer said.

Ogle is the only department member who carries two titles — the first being lieutenant, which designates his role as a driver and firefighter on the Blue shift, and the second being chaplain, which designates his role as caretaker and advisor for department members.

Ogle also has served a vital role in the Shawnee Fire Clown program for 22 years.

“The Shawnee Fire Clown program is our department’s fire and life safety education program geared toward school-age children in our community and surrounding areas,” Tischer said.

Ogle’s award moves him into the VFW’s State level for consideration.

“We appreciate the VFW showing their support and honoring the public servants in our community,” he said.
