“We are extremely pleased to announce that our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is back in operation this year," says Thixe Totty, Volunteers Impacting People (VIP) Director, who is in charge of the VITA program at Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency (COCAA).

“Our  NEW Shawnee office will start filing returns on Saturday, February 10 and they will continue until Saturday, April 14," adds Totty.  The new VITA office is located at 127 North Park; on the corner of N. Park and E. 9th.

The VITA Program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less and need assistance in filing their 2017 tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers prepare and e file federal and state taxes free for qualified individuals in the local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.

Qualified people seeking assistance with their tax returns in Pottawatomie County area should call 405-878-1512 and make an appointment.

The Shawnee VITA office is on the East side of the Shawnee Conservation office building and has its own entrance; enter by the south door on the front of the building - watch for the VITA sign. Appointments are requested and will have priority over walk-ins.

In addition to benefiting the individual taxpayers, the VITA program is also a benefit to the local community. Money that would have been spent on paid tax services goes instead to local businesses as the clients have a little bit more discretionary income, and this results in more sales tax income for the community.
