The Avedis Foundation has announced plans for the construction of a new office for the foundation at 1500 E. Independence in Shawnee.

Shawnee-based Greg Brown Homes, LLC was selected as the builder for the project, which officially began with the groundbreaking ceremony Friday.

“One of the things I'm most proud of is that this building will be built by someone from this community. It was important to all of us and it was a driving motive,” Avedis Board Member Chuck Skillings said during the event. “We are local, and we wanted local people to be involved in it.”

The new structure, to be constructed on approximately 11 acres, will provide additional office space for the foundation.

Skillings said the board re-evaluated and reassessed needs of the building about halfway through the planning process.

Most importantly, he said, was determining the most judicious use of the funds that were available.

“We look forward to the construction of approximately 6,800 square feet of space at the new location,” Avedis President and CEO Michelle Briggs said. “With the property’s park-like setting, we envision walking and biking trails in the future, as well."

Construction on the project is estimated to continue for one year.
