A house on Federal Street is a total loss after a fire Thursday morning, while an adjacent house had some damage to its siding and utility meters, firefighters said.

Shawnee firefighters responded just after 11 a.m. to find a fully-involved house fire on East Federal Street, said Tony Wittman with the Shawnee Fire Department.

The fire had spread to a house on the east side as well, he said, and while firefighters were able to get that blaze under control next door, there was some damage to the utility meters that will temporarily displace that home's occupants.

The house where the fire originated is considered a total loss, Wittman said. Cause of that fire is still under investigation by Fire Marshal James Kriwanek.

A Facebook post on the Project: SAFE page indicates the home that is a total loss was the residence of an advocate who serves others through her work at at Project:SAFE, so a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Jennifer Smothers and her daughter.
