Good morning to all who have just now opened their paper and run across the Center’s column. With all the Blue Zone events coming up the thought occurred that perhaps I should be reminding everyone of some of the different ways you can get healthier by coming to the Shawnee Senior Center. Let me list them for you (and remember they are all free for 50 and better adults):

Good morning to all who have just now opened their paper and run across the Center’s column. With all the Blue Zone events coming up the thought occurred that perhaps I should be reminding everyone of some of the different ways you can get healthier by coming to the Shawnee Senior Center. Let me list them for you (and remember they are all free for 50 and better adults):

1. The fitness classes- there are TaiChi classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 in the morning. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday there are Enhance Fitness programs from 8:30 to 9:30 in the mornings. For people who work, there are classes on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 4:00 to 5:00pm that are a balance of both programs: 30 minutes of TaiChi and 30 minutes of Enhance Fitness.

2. There are Aerobics classes on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 to 10:30am.

3. If you love to dance, come on down for the live Country Music of the Showtime Band on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 until 2:30pm. They love requests so let them know your favorite dance tune.

4. If you love to sing, there is gospel singing every Tuesday and Friday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 and they also love to take requests so everyone can join in and sing one of your favorite gospel hymns. And remember singing is a joyful way to lift your spirits.

And while you’re down there checking out what’s going on at the Shawnee Senior Center let me remind you that Val works up a new Calendar each month with all the activities listed complete with times and on the back of the Calendar you will find Bobbie’s list of lunchtime meals for the month. Pick one up and join us for any one or all of the many things that are listed. If you are unsure as to what a listed item entails, call the Center and ask, there is always someone there who will be happy to clue you in.

Now as to what special events will be going on this week there are two special events to remind you about and you can check them out with no cost to you.

The Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma has received funds from COEDD Area Agency on Aging (Central Oklahoma Economic Development District) to assist Seniors in preparing a will, implementing a Living Will if needed, and by preparing a Transfer by Death Deed and/or a Power of Attorney. This is a Federal Program provided by taxpayer dollars. Attorney Tara Martin and Paralegal Terry Martin will be available to answer questions requiring any specific legal information you may need on Thursday, March 29th beginning at 10:00am. All questions will be handled privately so have your questions ready and bring them down to the Senior Center and take advantage of this free legal program.

The second one is the “Your Legacy” event. Tammy Huston from Dignity Memorial and Resthaven Funeral Home will be available from 10:00am until 4:00pm on Thursday the 29th of March. If you need information about costs and the many ways you are able to preplan your funeral arrangements to minimize the stress and alleviate the financial and emotional burden on your family this is the time to sit down and talk to Tammy. Funeral costs continue to increase by 4% each year but with preplanning you can minimize the future cost. Stop in and chat with Tammy Huston and check out her information.

And now for the big Pool Tournament results. Last week we had our annual Pool Tournament in the Center’s Recreation Room. It was a double elimination tournament with 13 guys and one gal participating. The three top finishers were all awarded trophies and the first place winner also received a $50.00 gift card. Congratulations to the winners and the Center’s thanks to all who participated Winners were: First Place was taken by Ken Maynard; Second went to Jim Rose; and Third went to Danny Bird. Special thanks to Grace Living Center/Rose Manor for sponsoring the Tournament and to Sherrie Dykes for once again doing a terrific job of pulling it all together for us. Thanks to all and hope we see you again next year.

Also check out Kate Joyce on the “Mike in the Morning” show on KGFF Radio (FM100.9 and AM 1450) every Wednesday at 8:35am and hear the latest info on what’s happening at the Shawnee Senior Center.

And to all remember that at the Shawnee Senior Center “Age is Just a Number”. Our new and improved website is ShawneeSeniors.org and our also new and improved Facebook page is ‘ShawneeSeniorCenter.”
