James Whitney Briggs, 92, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 7, 2018, surrounded by loved ones.

James Whitney Briggs, 92, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 7, 2018, surrounded by loved ones.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Walker Funeral Service, 201 E. 45th, in Shawnee. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Oklahoma City.

Jim was born Jan. 23, 1926, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, to Clara Alice Lewis and Daniel Briggs.

He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lucille Mae Hendrix Briggs, sons James L. Briggs and Richard J. Briggs; his parents and his brothers Clyde Stewart and Bill Briggs, both veterans of WWII.

A proud WWII Navy veteran, after the war, Jim began his career at OG&E and retired in 1987 as a regional manager, after almost 40 years of service. During his career he enjoyed serving in leadership positions on numerous community and charitable boards in Midwest City, Oklahoma City and Shawnee.

Jim and Lucille were members and Sunday school teachers at Aydelotte Baptist Church for many years.

He is survived by daughter Betty S. Briggs, Tyler, Texas; son Steven E. Briggs and wife Susan, Piedmont. In addition, Jim is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
