Election season officially opened Wednesday as area candidates began filing for office.

Jeannie Stover, secretary of the Pottawatomie County Election Board, said filing continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday.

The deadline for filing as a candidate is 5 p.m. Friday, April 13, no exceptions, she said.

In Pottawatomie County, several county seats are up this term, as well as seats on the Shawnee city commission.

Shawnee

Also up for election this cycle are three seats on the Shawnee City Commission: Wards 1, 5 and 6. The seats are currently held by Dub Bushong, Lesa Shaw and Ben Salter, respectively.

• Ward 5 — Mark Sehorn

• Ward 6 — Ben Salter

County

Stover said four Pottawatomie County offices will be filled this year:

• Pottawatomie County Assessor — Candidate filings Wednesday include incumbent Democrat Troyce King, 50, of Shawnee

• Pottawatomie County Treasurer — Candidate filings Wednesday include incumbent Democrat Wendy Magnus, 50, of Shawnee

• Pottawatomie County Commissioner, District 1 — Candidate filings Wednesday include Republican incumbent Melissa Dennis, 50, of Shawnee; and Republican Bill V. Meek, 73, of Shawnee

• Pottawatomie County Commissioner, District 3 — Candidate filings Wednesday include incumbent Democrat Eddie Stackhouse, 47, of Maud

District Attorney

The District Attorney seat for District 23, which serves Pottawatomie and Lincoln Counties, is also up for filing this year. After four terms in office, District Attorney Richard L. Smothermon has announced he won’t be seeking a fifth term.

Candidate filings Wednesday include:

• Democrat Adam R. Panter, 37, of Shawnee

In Lincoln County, the seats of County Assessor, County Treasurer and District 1 and 3 County Commissioner also are up for election this year.

Several state, legislative and judicial elections are scheduled this year as well, including House of Representatives for this area and Senators in even-numbered districts, along with U.S. Representative.

State Representative

Candidate filings Wednesday include:

• State Representative District 26 — Republican incumbent Dell Kerbs, 44, of Shawnee; Democrat Lauren Richter, 29, of Shawnee; and Republican Lucas Craig Connan, 37, of Shawnee

• State Representative District 28 — Republican incumbent Zack Taylor, 34, of Seminole; and Democrat Steve Barnes, 61, of Wewoka

State Senate

Candidate filings Wednesday include:

• State Senate District 28 — Republican Robert McKinney, 28, of Tecumseh

Judicial

For District Judge, District 23, Office 1, Incumbent Cindy Ferrell-Ashwood, Chandler, filed.

For District Judge, District 23, Office 2, Incumbent John Canavan Jr. filed.

Shawnee Attorney Kelli McCullar, 50, Shawnee,has filed for a Pottawatomie County Associate District Judge seat, while Incumbent Sheila G. Kirk, 56, Meeker, has filed for the Associate District Judge seat in Lincoln County.

Filing

Candidates for state offices must file their declarations of candidacy with the Secretary of the State Election Board, which is in Oklahoma City, while candidates running for county offices file with the Secretary of the County Election Board.
