At the conclusion of candidate filing Friday, a race developed for District Attorney as well as the Pottawatomie County Associate District Judge seat in Pottawatomie County.

District 23 District Attorney Richard L. Smothermon, who serves Pottawatomie and Lincoln Counties, chose not to seek a fifth term, but two candidates are vying for that seat.

Current First Assistant District Attorney Adam R. Panter, 37, Shawnee, filed as a Democratic candidate for the seat, while Shawnee attorney Allan Grubb, 42, running as a Republican, also filed for District Attorney.

In local judge races, three judges retained their current seats on the bench, but there will be an election needed for the Associate District Judge seat in Pottawatomie County.

Current Associate District Judge Dawson Engle — for family reasons — decided not to file as a candidate to retain his seat, but two other candidates are vying for his post.

Shawnee Attorney Kelli McCullar, 50, filed Wednesday, and Tracy L. McDaniel, 45, who is the current Special District Judge, filed her candidacy paperwork for Associate District Judge on Friday.

Engle, who has served as Associate District Judge for the past two years and before that was Special District Judge, has served 13 years on the bench in this district. He said his daughter will graduate next year and head off to college, so he felt it was important to spend more time with his family rather than spending the next seven months running for election.

“This job takes me away from family enough,” he said, adding this time will be good for him and his family. He'll continue to serve in his current judicial post until his successor takes office in January.

“I'm very proud to have served both counties,” Engle said.

Lincoln County Associate District Judge Sheila G. Kirk, 56, filed to retain her seat and did not draw an opponent, so she remains in that seat unopposed.

Both of the District Judges for District 23, Office 1 Incumbent Cindy Ferrell-Ashwood, Chandler, and Office 2 Incumbent John Canavan Jr., Shawnee, also were unopposed and retain their seats on the bench.
