Two Seminole State College employees were recognized for their hard work and dedication during the monthly Seminole Chamber of Commerce Forum on Thursday. Assistant Professor of Nursing Brenda Hudson was honored as “Educator of the Month” and Financial Aid Specialist Edith Cathey was honored as “Professional Staff Member of the Month.”

The Seminole Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, along with the Lions Club and Blue Ribbon Realty, recognize SSC employees several times during Forum each year. Individuals are nominated from across the campus and chosen by SSC administrators to receive the honor.

Hudson came to SSC in 2012 as a professor for the nursing program. She has taught in a variety of areas and levels of the program, both in the classroom and as a clinical instructor. She currently teaches Psychosocial Nursing and Pharmacology and serves as Medical-Surgical clinical instructor.

Hudson also works as a psychiatric nurse at Mercy Hospital in Ada where she has been employed since 2010. At Mercy, she cares for geriatric psych patients, as well as the intellectually and developmentally disabled. She is a member of the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps with training in Psychological First Aid.

She holds an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing from SSC and a Bachelor of Art in Sociology – with a minor in psychology – from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing Education from the University of Oklahoma.

Hudson resides in Konawa and has six children – two who are SSC graduates – and four grandchildren. She is a cancer survivor and has been in remission since 2014.

Cathey came to SSC in 2003 as an Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Fiscal Affairs. In 2007, she was promoted to Director of the SSC Bookstore, and in 2014 she assumed her current role as Financial Aid Specialist.

In Financial Services, Cathey is responsible for processing student financial aid files and requesting disbursements for Pell and loans for eligible students. At the College, she currently serves as Chair-Elect for Professional Staff Council. She is also a member of the Oklahoma Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and the Southwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

Cathey received her associate’s degree in business from SSC and went on to double major at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina, earning her bachelor’s degree in both business administration and computer information systems.

She and her husband Shannon of 21 years reside in Bowlegs with their two children, Alley, 15, and Alex, 3. In their spare time, the couple enjoy coaching their son’s Wee Ball team. Cathey is also an active member of Bowlegs First Baptist Church and teaches the two and three-year-old “Puggles” class.
