At SSM Health hospitals and clinics across Oklahoma Monday, employees, physicians and community members gathered as hospital leaders unveiled new signs, along with the promise of a renewed commitment to patients.

Now, St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital is to be known as SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital — Shawnee.

“For nearly 120 years, we have had the honor and privilege of serving patients in central Oklahoma and beyond,” Joe Hodges, regional president of SSM Health in Oklahoma, said.

The new name reflects unity and organizational commitment to providing exceptional health care services, improving the lives of patients and improving the health of communities, he said.

“Today we are renewing our vow to this community and everyone we serve,” Hodges said. “While our look may be changing, we remain a Catholic health system dedicated to our mission. Our commitment to provide an exceptional experience to every patient remains the same.”

Hodges said the new SSM Health name will be used to better connect its facilities and services and serve as a visual cue to friends and communities across our four-state system.

Over the coming months, he said the signs on the outside and inside of each of its clinics, hospitals and healthplexes will be changing over to the new SSM Health logo; however, there will be no change in the providers patients have come to know and are familiar with.

The addition of a large cross is planned to adorn each facility, as well.

“The design if the cross was inspired by an elegant brass cross featured in the St. Anthony museum in Oklahoma City,” Hodges said. “The cross is simple, yet modern; the cutout in the middle signifies eternal life and the healing power of presence.”

The hospital's president, Chuck Skillings said, though he doesn't yet know where the cross will be placed, he said it is befitting that the facility will have something that truly says who they are and what they are about in the organization.

SSM Health in Oklahoma

SSM Health is a Catholic, not-for-profit health system serving the comprehensive health needs of communities across the Midwest through a robust and fully integrated health care delivery system.

SSM Health has provided health care services in Oklahoma for generations, opening St. Anthony Hospital in 1898. In 1995, Bone and Joint Hospital at St. Anthony joined SSM Health, followed by St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital in 2012.

The organization’s more than 40,000 employees and 10,000 providers — 4,500 of them in Oklahoma — offer health care services and strive to reveal God’s healing presence to everyone they serve, Hodges said.
