Shawnee--The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art offers a line-up of classes sure to keep your child’s hands busy and their minds engaged this summer.

“The museum offers classes for children ages 3-18,” explains Curator of Education Donna Merkt.  Museum summer classes begin June 1 and are offered through July.

“There are three types of classes:  Teen/Tween Art and Theater Clinics for ages 11-18, Creative Arts Camps (both art and theater) for ages 5-13, and Primary Partners classes for ages 3-6 with their favorite grown-up partner,” said Merkt.  Camps and clinics are 2-3 hours daily, over a week, while the Primary Partners classes are each one hour.

“We’re really excited about our Da Vinci camp this year!” exclaims Merkt.  “We’ve partnered with Thick Descriptions, a science-based STEAM organization, to ensure that the participants get a well-rounded exploration of science, technology, and art.”  Students in the class will consider how Renaissance artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci designed his flying machines and other creations.

Week-long Creative Arts Camps kick off June 4-8 with Da Vinci camp, and follows with In the Spotlight (theater camp with Emily Coley) and art camps exploring Pharaoh’s Princesses & Pyramids (with Patrick Riley), The Art of Cartooning (with Alisha Weston), Watercolors (with Beth Wilhelm), and Piece by Piece (mosaics with Debra Christian).  Camps are $60 (including supplies); discounts are offered for museum members and scholarships are available for any child receiving assistance.

Primary Partners classes begin June 1.  Jude Delaney teaches the first session about color and includes an art activity, a brief tour, and story time in the gallery.  Classes are $5 for each student (and one grown-up partner).

Week-long Teen/Tween Art and Theater Clinics are June 18-22 (theater with David Coley) and June 25-29 (ceramics with John Bartos).  Clinics are $80 (supplies included); discounts are offered for museum members and scholarships are available for any child receiving assistance.
