If an agreement can be worked out, Shawnee's new elementary school could be constructed on land area west of 45th and Kickapoo Streets.

The Shawnee district is preparing to grow and build a fifth elementary school after passing a a $32 million bond issue. The school, along with many other district improvements, was passed by voters in 2016.

Back in June, the school board approved an $8 million lease/purchase agreement pertaining to a new school, but the negotiations of where it will be built are still ongoing.

Superintendent Dr. April Grace confirms land near 45th and Kickapoo is the land they are trying to acquire from the Commission of the Land Office, but at this point, it's still a waiting game.

“We have started the process with the CLO and their processes take some time,” she said. “I continue to stay in touch with them and hope that we see some additional progress in the upcoming months.”
