BETHEL ACRES — Bethel scored two runs in the first inning and used good pitching and defense to make those runs stand up in a 2-0 victory over Seminole Monday.
Rian Gamble started the game with a single and she stole second base. Skylar Pollard singled to center field and Gamble sprinted around third and beat the tag to the plate to give the Lady Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Pollard took second on the throw and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Jordyn Zachary singled to drive in Pollard and give Bethel a 2-0 lead.
Seminole got runners in scoring position in the third but Zachary pitched her way out of the jam. In the fifth inning, Seminole got a runner to first, but when Zachary got a strike three call on a full count, the Lady Chieftain runner got too far off of first base and Zachary fired to Brooklyn Giddens at first to complete a double play.
In the sixth inning, Seminole threatened again with runners on second and third. On a fly ball to left field, Skylar Fletcher made the catch and fired the ball home to Gamble who tagged the runner out trying to score to end the inning.
In the seventh, SHS had another close call with the game on the line. But this time, Gamble picked off a runner at second with a great throw to Pollard for the second out. A groundout ended game with Bethel on top.
Bethel had only four hits off of freshman pitcher Kaylyn Cotner with Gamble, Pollard, Zachary and Fletcher all picking up singles.
Seminole's Aubrey Powell led all hitters with two. Seminole also only had four hits total.
Cotner struck out four and walked two. Zachary struck out six and walked four.
