MEEKER—Off and running. the Meeker Bulldogs opened the 2018-2019 football campaign with a 32-6 win over the Luther Lions Friday night. Meeker pounded out 265 yards on the ground while holding Luther to just 101 total yards.

“I thought we were very physical on both sides of the ball tonight,” said Meeker head coach DJ Howell. “I thought we wore them down in the later stages of the game.”

The Bulldogs and Lions traded punches for the first half of the opening quarter until Dakota Gabbert provided a spark for Meeker.

Gabbert fielded a punt at the Luther 36- yard line and received some blocks that sprang him down the left sideline for the season’s first score. Meeker led 6-0 at the 5:58 mark and doubled the lead with 10:41 left in the second quarter on a one yard scoring run by Caden Wolford.

Wolford finished with a monster game in the backfield. He ran the ball 26 times and amassed 207 yards in the contest. “He’s a man,” said Howell. “He’s a great kid and I thought he just got stronger during the game. He’s the type of runner that if you keep putting the ball in his gut, he is just going to wear you out.”

Midway through the third quarter, Meeker made a mistake and Luther took advantage to cut the lead in half, 12-6, with 3:36 left in the half.

Jacob Martin threw an errant pass that was intercepted by Luther’s Coleman Stastny. Stastny then double downed as he took a 53-yard jaunt on a hook-and-lateral from quarterback Peyton Wilson and wide receiver Drew Sheer.

Meeker stiffened on defense the remainder of the game. In all, the Bulldogs registered five sacks on quarterback Peyton Wilson. “We knew we had to get pressure on him,” said Howell. “Our line did a great job up front.”

Wolford answered, big time, on the next possession. He took the handoff and found a hole up the gut of the Lion defense and scored from 75 yards out, increasing the lead to 20-6 at the half.

The Bulldogs scored two more times in the second half. Martin scored on a bootleg from four yards out with 1:43 left in the third quarter and Wolford scored his second touchdown on a 16-yard power drive to end the scoring at 32-6.

Meeker recorded five sacks with Wolford leading the way with two.

Meeker, 1-0, will host McLoud next Friday night. It will be the season opener for the Redskins.
