Last week I was sitting at the front desk when a lovely lady and her daughter came in and wanted some information about renting a room at the center that might be appropriate for a wedding reception. They had originally scouted out the center and had some info from Kate but now they had made a decision and needed to talk terms. While I listened to the conversation between the bride-to-be, her daughter, Kate and Valorie, I decided that renting a place at the center for most kinds of events is a great idea. And, since it is a great idea, it would make a great column for this week.

I have mentioned the rental of space at the center before so it’s not an idea that you have probably never heard before but maybe this time I can give it a twist that might tweek your curiosity if you are anticipating some kind of social event.

First of all, and probably the most probable, are birthdays. School is back in session and that means that birthdays are celebrated with more friends from school and so a larger venue than your living room or rec room may be needed for your child or grandchild’s’s big day. We have several families that have spent birthdays within our Community Room because it’s big, has fun mirrors to decorate, and a floor that handles running, food accidents and spills. Need tables at your party? Tell us how many are coming and the tables and chairs will be set up where you want, leaving playing room available. It’s an easy place for you to clean up after the party’s over and you can then go home to your quiet, clean house with no qualms about the fact that everybody had a great time and you don’t have hours of cleanup at your house.

And, of course, not all birthdays celebrated are for the “rug rat” age kids, we can also accommodate the tweens and teens in your family. Our “pool room” is perfect for these groups of kids. The room is large (almost as large as the community room) and it has three pool tables and comes complete with pool cues and the striped and solid balls needed to play. It also comes with a ping pong table (great for playing singles or doubles), a dartboard and card games and dominoes along with a chess set for those serious thinkers in your child’s group of friends.

Now on to possibilities for those adults who have meetings or special groups that might be better served in a non-home environment. We have spaces for you also. We have two rooms available (CR1 and CR2) that are close to the front door which makes for easy access. They both come complete with chairs and tables for those meetings that need no interruptions and privacy. Need some coffee in there, let us know and you will find coffee, cups and the condiments necessary to enjoy the brew waiting for you and your meeting to begin.

How about a shower (be it baby or wedding) we have the perfect room. The Wood Room comes with access to a small kitchen if you intend to have food available at your event. But decorating the tables and the movable wall is always fun and there’s plenty of room to move around and enjoy the visiting and fellowship.

Have a group that meets monthly or bi-monthly and you are looking for a bigger place to meet. Join the ranks of groups like the Square 8 Square Dancers or the Spinning Spools Quilters or maybe an exercise group like the Zumba with Candi Saturday morning’s group and meet at the Center.

Family reunions are our most frequent groups to enjoy the Wood Room and its meals possibilities. Need ice for the tea or to make those soda drinks cold. Check it out, we have an ice machine too..

Our restroom facilities are always clean and bright and easily accessible for handicapped individuals. Entrance to the building is also easy for all with availability to a 3 step stairway or by ramp for those who may have problems with stairs. There are no stairs in our building and every room is easily accessible for use.

All rooms may be rented for use on weekends, holidays or after 5:00pm on any weekday. You may come in any day during the week and check us out. If you would like a tour of our facilities for any future project you may be having please contact Valorie at 878-1528 to set up a time.

Come check us out and let Valorie give you a quote!!

Cruise Director Kate Joyce will be joining the “Mike in the Morning” show on Wednesday morning at 8:35 on KGFF Radio (FM 100.9 or AM 1450) to remind everyone of the “happenings” at the Shawnee Senior Center.

Remember that at the Shawnee Senior Center “Age is Just a Number”. Check out the Facebook page “Shawnee Senior Center” or the website “ShawneeSenior.org” and, if you don’t have access to a computer, drop in at the Center (401 N. Bell) and pick up a Calendar from the Front Desk. On the back of the calendar is the menu for the month so…check it out too.

And, as always, see you at the center!
