Lindsay Dennis, Shawnee High School English teacher, has been named one of three winners of the 2018 INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Courage Award. The award recognizes individuals who have overcome disabilities caused by injury or illness by facing the physical and mental challenges of rehabilitation with courage and determination.
After a serious car accident left her paralyzed, Dennis had to learn how to live life in a wheelchair. She had to adapt how she cared for herself, her husband and their two small children. Initially, Dennis worried that she may never be able to return to the classroom, but after months of both inpatient and outpatient therapy and lots of hard work, she was able to return to the job she so passionately loves.
Dennis currently teaches English II and serves as yearbook advisor at SHS.
She will be honored at the annual Courage Award Luncheon Sept. 20.
