The Model A-style Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store, 1201 N. Harrison, was one of the first built by the 41-year-old Oklahoma company and was among nearly 60 locations chosen for replacement two years ago.
“It was decided a couple years ago to replace some of the non-drive-thru stores in the five-state area,” Andie Schwab, public relations, said. “The goal at that time included 59 stores without drive-thrus.”
The 32-year-old store on Harrison will be replaced with a modern building, complete with a larger fountain, increased seating, automatic doors and other features, Schwab said.
“We went from the very first model to our latest on this one,” Schwab said. “This model includes a huge fresh market — really a big focus. We’re offering so many different products now. We have everything from paper towels to pomegranate juice. And since we deliver every other day to each store, it’s fresh, really fresh.”
The new building, which will also include a double drive-thru, is a 5,765-square-foot Model W building. The building can seat 86 guests and will require a staff of about 50 to 60 employees, Schwab said.
The employee requirement means increased jobs for Shawnee, as the current store employs significantly fewer people than what is necessary for the new location, she said.
The Model W prototype first debuted on July 28, 2007, in Norman, she said.
When the new Shawnee store is ready to open, Schwab said the transition should not affect customers.
“The night before, the old store at Harrison will close at the regular time and the new one will open the next morning with breakfast,” Schwab said.
In addition to the new location, Braum’s introduced two new sandwiches — a southwest chipotle and a chicken bacon ranch, both in June — and nine new ice cream flavors this summer.
“Birthday cake is one of the most popular,” Schwab said. “It tastes like cake and is a bright blue, which is probably part of why it’s so popular with the kids. All the new flavors have been really well-accepted.”
Applications are being accepted at all Braum’s locations for the new store, Schwab said.
