Shawnee Public Schools administrators want to take an aggressive approach to completing repairs to Shawnee High School and Jim Thorpe Stadium.
With I-93 voters passing the $3 million bond issue Tuesday, Superintendent Marilyn Bradford has begun the process to commence repairs.
Voters said the district could spend $1.87 million to repair and replace the high school roof, remodel restrooms, replace lockers, retrofit the lighting and electrical system and update the heating and ventilated air system and spend $1.13 million to construct, furnish and equip new restroom and concession facilities at the football stadium.
District administrators are wasting no time.
“We have to call for the sale of the bonds,” Bradford said. “That will take place next Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m. in a special meeting.”
The actual sale of the bonds is scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 8, she said.
“Next Tuesday, they’ll advertise the $3 million bond, through that time period. On Dec. 8, we’ll actually sell them and award them.”
Larry Walker, second vice president of the Shawnee Board of Education, said the board will move on this quickly.
“Well the next step will be to get the architects as quickly as possible to get everything ready so when the bond monies are available, funds are available that we’re ready to start on the roof project with this bond money.”
Students at the high school have had to dodge trash cans and wet lockers, causing numerous problems during the moist late summer and early fall.
Students, faculty and staff at the school have said it was embarrassing when the school would host events and a distraction when in classes. Teachers have been forced out of their rooms, such as some of the science labs.
With this passage, that soon will be a thing of the past.
Bradford she and others plan to meet today with the architect to get specifications ready for the roof project.
“We are hopeful the funds will be available in January and go ahead to award the bid in February,” she said. “That’s a pretty tight timeline. It would be pretty aggressive to get stared by February, but that’s what we’re pushing for. We’re being aggressive about getting this done.”
