Shawnee students returned to school Wednesday and for two best friends, it was a chance see one another and meet new friends.
Jefferson Elementary fifth grade students Emily Tiger and Parker Greenwood have been best friends for as long as they can remember.
“We’ve known each other since we were born and our parents are great friends,” Greenwood said.
“He’s like my brother,” Tiger said.
Along with seeing each other, the two fifth graders also were looking forward to learning and making new friends.
“Well, I really like my teacher and I can’t wait to learn new stuff,” Tiger said, adding she was ready for school to start, “because I missed all my friends and I cannot wait to meet new friends.”
“I get to have new teachers, I get to learn new things, I get to have new friends,” she said.
Vickie Penson, principal at Jefferson, said she and her staff were ready for the beginning of school as well.
“This has been a really good beginning,” she said. “We’re just really excited to get started.”
As of Wednesday morning, the school had 362 students enrolled and could see an additional 55, who hadn’t shown up yet, Penson said.
That number is 20 more than in May, when the last school year ended, she said.
The increase in students will be coupled with Penson losing to two teachers.
Second through fifth grade classes have more than 20 students per class and “first grade is quickly reaching 20,” Penson said.
“We’ll take up the slack,” she said.
