Two concerned residents addressed the Shawnee Public Schools Board of Education Tuesday night about projects at Jim Thorpe Stadium.
The two each asked for the board to appoint an oversight committee to help with what will happen with the renovations of the track around the football field, along with construction of a new concession stand/restroom facility.
Tim Barrick, who addressed the board as a representative of concerned citizens, said he would like to see a committee who can address some of the issues being seen with regards to how the project is being handled. He wanted the oversight committee to “dispel rumors and innuendo.”
According to minutes from the Shawnee Quarterback Club’s board meeting Oct. 20, Superintendent Marilyn Bradford addressed the group on the upcoming bond issue and the improvements to the football field and stadium.
The minutes continue by stating the club was told a committee would be formed and school administration would work closely with coaches and the quarterback club for improvements.
Barrick’s comments Tuesday eluded to the fact that, to his knowledge, no committee had been formed as of yet.
At the Shawnee Board of Education January meeting, members approved the 65 percent construction documents for the track project. Those documents say the goal posts, scoreboard, 25 second clock and home team entrance gate would be relocated to make the necessary room for track improvements.
These issues were addressed by Barrick, who also was concerned because of the track surface chosen and the number of running lanes chosen for the track.
The 65 percent documents specify the new track would have flush concrete curbs on inside and outside of the track, the track to be poured-in-place polyurethane and rubber surface over an asphalt base and an eight-lane track, with each lane being 42 inches wide, with 2 inch striping.
Barrick said he attended a meeting this past Wednesday to discuss the renovations with a group of concerned citizens. At that meeting, he sensed a frustration amongst the people in attendance.
Russ Oliver also was at the meeting to suggest the formation of an oversight committee.
He went on to suggest that Shawnee Public Schools Athletic and Activities Director Steve Fluke be chairman of the committee.
A decision was not made Tuesday.
Prior to the meeting, the district scheduled a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Administration Building, 326 N. Union. That meeting is scheduled as a Q&A about the track project.
