McLoud graduate earns DoD scholarship

MCLOUD, Okla. —

Ryan Garrett, a 2008 graduate from McLoud High School, was awarded a scholarship under the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Program. There was a competitive field of more than 1,500 applicants for this scholarship. The scholarship includes all tuition, fees, books and a salary of $25,000 a year for living expenses. In return, Garrett will work for the Department of Defense in a civilian status upon completion of his engineering degree. 
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, applicants have to earn a 3.0 GPA and be a freshman at a qualifying university. Garrett attends Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
SMART is managed by the Naval Postgraduate School on behalf of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The American Society for Engineering Education works to administer the scholarship. Garrett was selected by the Air Force Material Command, Air Logistic Center at Tinker Air Force Base. 
Garrett will attend an orientation for the SMART Scholarship Program at Monterey, Calif., in July. Each summer he will be required to complete an internship at a variety of selected DOD sites.
