Shawnee High School Forensics has taken the championship spot in the Public Forum debate for each of the three tournaments in which they have competed.
Kody Lockhard and JT Welch took the first place spot at B.T. Washington High School Debate tournament in December.
Michael McLaughlin and Rijul Gupta won first place in the Bixby Debate tournament recently and the first place again at the Jenks Debate tournament.
Austin Bushong and Robert Woodmore earned third place in PF Debate at the Jenks Debate Tournament.
SHS Forensics also enjoyed success in the Speech and Acting events at the Jenks Speech Tournament recently as well. Logan Davis and Daidra Gaines took the championship spot in the dramatic duet, which earned them a slot at the Regional Speech Competition in March.
Rijul Gupta placed third in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking and Dalton Smith succeeded as the champion in the same event. Both Gupta and Smith have qualified for Regional Speech Competition in March.
Part of the SHS Forensic Department includes the National Forensic League, which is a national honor society for Speech and Debate students.
Each year, these students compete for a chance to represent their team at the NFL National tournament. Our students are now preparing for the District contest that would send them to NFL nationals.
The top PF Debate team at SHS, Michael McLauglin and Rijul Gupta, are taking their preparation to a higher level and competing at the Stanford University Debate tournament at the first weekend in February as independent competitors. They hope to gain skills in strategy and persuasion that will enable them to be ready for the national qualifier.
