Nine members of the St. Gregory’s University Buckley Team were officially commissioned during Sunday’s morning Mass at St. Gregory’s Abbey.
The Buckley Team, in its 20th year, is a group of students who conduct retreats for high school youth in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas.
As part of the annual commissioning ceremony, the students were presented to the congregation, took an oath and were offered a blessing by St. Gregory’s Abbey monk Father Charles Buckley, O.S.B. The Buckley Team was made possible in 1990 by Fr. Charles’ parents, John and Genevieve Buckley, who provided an estate gift that helps fund the group.
Members of this year’s team include: Kelly Hogan (Owasso), Karen Hynes, Wichita Falls, Texas; Josh Dutchover, Justin, Texas; J. Salgado-Andrade, Pauls Valley; Connie Bair, Mustang; Jess Honeycutt, Ft. Smith, Ark.; Tim Fernandez, Claremore; Megan Deslongchamp, Norman; and Tawnni Powell-McCarthy, Norman.
The team plans to visit 11 parishes in Oklahoma and Arkansas this academic year, providing a ministry in which students can learn from other young adults. Also scheduled are seven retreats on the SGU campus.
The team tailors each retreat to meet the needs of the parish or school with which it works. Although Confirmation is a common topic, the team also provides retreats on various sacraments, saints, Advent, Lent and a number of other areas.
To request a future Buckley retreat at your parish or school, please contact Buckley Team Coordinator Victor Poole via e-mail at vppoole@stgregorys.edu or mail a letter to him at 1900 W. MacArthur Street, Shawnee, OK 74804. Requests should include the type/theme of the retreat, three possible dates, parish/school participating, projected number of people attending (with ages), and the parish/school contact name, address, phone number and e-mail.
