Whether it’s encouraging parents to be more involved in their child’s education or raising reading levels, Jesse Hernandez hopes to meet those goals this year.
Hernandez was hired in June as Shawnee Early Childhood Center’s new principal after the retirement of Paul Pounds.
Hernandez said he has set at least to major goals — getting parents more involved and raising reading levels.
One new program Hernandez and staff initiated is VIP, Volunteers in Partnership. Each parent received a list of specific things they should do with their children, primarily focused on the child’s education, he said. If parents have a list of specifics they need to do, they can better help their children.
“Parents have, in turn, responded to that really well,” Hernandez said.
During a recent Parent Night, more than 150 parents showed up with their children to meet teachers and administration at the school, he said.
“We’re seeing great parent involvement, that’s one of our goals,” Hernandez said.
Another goal Hernandez has set is to get children reading at higher levels.
“We have a program to turn out a certain percentage of students at a certain level,” Hernandez said.
The Star Program will help teachers assess reading skills of students, he said.
“This will allow teachers to set and meet goals,” Hernandez said.
These goals are designed to help teachers not only increase their reading skills, but also encourage them to read, he said.
“These are big goals that we’re excited about,” Hernandez said.
That excited feeling carries over to his feelings on being the new principal as well, he said.
“It’s been going great,” Hernandez said. “This is going really smooth.”
