A Shawnee man charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for the stabbing of a resident at a downtown Shawnee housing complex was adjudged guilty Tuesday and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Donald Vernon Gregg, 53, was scheduled for jury trial this week in Pottawatomie County District Court. Tuesday, he appeared before Associate District Judge John Gardner, where prosecutors and the defense both stipulated to evidence in the case, court records show.

Arguments were presented and the state’s exhibits were received before Gregg was adjudged guilty and sentenced.

Gregg was accused of using a knife to stab Herbron Bryan Hughes, in the head and neck on April 23, 2011. Shawnee police responded to the stabbing about 9:39 p.m. at the High Rise, 101 W. 10th.

When officers arrived, firefighters and REACT EMS medics were already giving medical attention to Hughes, who had blood running down his chest from a stab wound to the neck, the police report shows.

Police found a trail of blood from Hughes’ apartment down to the lobby area, where Hughes got help as the suspect allegedly fled out an east door.
Police weren’t able to local Gregg that night, but Gregg was taken into custody by Maud police the following day.

The police report didn’t list a possible motive for the case, but after Gregg’s arrest, he reportedly spoke with detectives and said he went to Hughes’ apartment asking for a ride and that they had fought, documents show.

He allegedly told detectives he ran out of the complex and went to a friend’s house, then said he “hid in a train box car” until the next morning. After that, he said he hitchhiked to Maud, where he wanted to see family and then surrender himself to authorities.

Gregg allegedly denied knowing exactly what he did to Hughes by saying he had “blacked out,” and denied having a knife or remembering getting rid of it, the arrest warrant shows.

Hughes was reportedly stabbed several times in the head and twice in the neck and was taken to Unity Health Center, then transferred to OU Medical Center. Hughes underwent surgery and was later released from the hospital to recuperate with his family.

Gregg is now jailed at the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center, where he’ll remain until his transfer to a state penitentiary.
