A motorist driving the wrong direction in a divided two-lane area of SH 9 resulted in accident that killed a man Thursday night, police said.
Tecumseh Police Department Spokesman Todd Beesley said the head-on collision occurred near Harrison Street, east of the U.S. 177 interchange.
Beesley said preliminary reports indicate the male driver of a Chevrolet pickup was driving the wrong way, going eastbound in the westbound lanes of SH 9, and collided with a westbound Cadillac.
That area of SH 9 is divided, with two lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions.
From witness reports, the driver of the pickup had been in the wrong lane from where SH 9 begins to divide in that area, Beesley said.
The driver of the older-model Cadillac died at the scene, Beesley said, and had to be extricated from the wreckage by Tecumseh firefighters.
The man driving the pickup was taken by REACT EMS ambulance to Unity Health Center with unspecified injuries, although Beesley said he was reported to be in stable condition.
As emergency crews worked the scene, westbound SH 9 into Tecumseh was closed and traffic was being diverted.
The accident was still under investigation late Thursday night; Beesley said neither driver had any passengers.
The names of the drivers involved weren’t being released until relatives could be notified, he said.
Beesley said police also are looking into the possibility that alcohol may have been involved in this accident.
Tecumseh police were being assisted at the scene by Pottawatomie County sheriff’s deputies, tribal police, as well as a state troopers.
Watch for updates.
