SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Effective as of September 5, 2008, William Mathis will no longer be serving as the Chief of Police of the City of Shawnee. Chief Mathis commenced his employment with the City in October of 2006 following 26 years of service with the Lawton Police Department.

During his tenure with the City of Shawnee, Chief Mathis was instrumental in initiating new units within the Department, such as the gang unit, lake unit, crisis unit, and professional standards, development of an enhanced training program, including securing the acquisition of a use of force simulator and driving simulator.

After much discussion and review, the City has determined that it is in the best interest of the community and the Department to go in a different direction in the management of the Police Department. The City appreciates Chief Mathis’ contribution to the City, the Department, and the community and wishes him well in his future endeavors.

Lt. Russell Frantz will be serving as Interim Chief of Police until further
notice. Lieutenant Frantz has been an officer with this Department for 21 years and is a graduate of the National FBI Academy for law enforcement officials. He is also an active member of the United States Air Force Reserves.
