Shawnee City Manager Brian McDougal received an evaluation from city commissioners this week of his performance to-date.
“It went well,” McDougal said of the evaluation and subsequent comments from Mayor Linda Peterson and others.
The evaluation, which came at about the 10-month mark of McDougal’s employment with the city, was suggested by the city manager himself as a way to ensure he was adequately meeting the objectives set forth by commissioners.
“It’s important to get feedback on a regular basis both for my performance and to make sure we are where we need to be and are on track for what the commissioners want to see accomplished,” he said.
Peterson said that the goal for evaluations of the city manager was originally to review performance every three to six months but that McDougal “requested we do it more often.”
“Overall, we are pleased with his progress,” Peterson said. “We had this [evaluation] mainly as an opportunity to discuss where we’ve been, where we are and where to go from here ... We talk to Brian individually at times, but it’s good to get together, as a group, like this.”
Among the items where McDougal displayed less strength was “organizational structuring,” the mayor said. However, although this item hadn’t been “fully taken charge of,” she said it was likely due to problems with the economy, which prevent hiring and training of personnel in some instances.
McDougal’s strengths, as listed by the mayor, include his ability to move forward on projects highly-desired by the commission and citizenry, such as improvement of the city’s water supply and plans for construction of a regional park. Another strength, she said, was in the way he encourages, trusts and relies on the various department heads employed by the city.
Long-term planning, such as with capital improvement projects, was a strength of McDougal’s noted by the mayor, while short-term fiscal management was “managed fairly well,” she said.
In addition to McDougal’s performance, Peterson said commissioners also discussed what the next steps are for projects to work on in the future and “how we get there.”
McDougal’s first day as city manager for Shawnee was Feb. 2.
