After fire destroyed Loco’s in downtown Shawnee last week, two adjacent Main Street businesses are continuing clean-up to reopen soon, although one is continuing to serve customers through phone and online orders.

The overnight blaze Aug. 18 destroyed Loco’s, an antique and collectibles store, 107 E. Main. While the store front remains, the rest of the building is now a pile of rubble. Owner Lori West has said she wants to reopen.

The businesses on each side, Pott County Bookstore to the east and Sense of Charm to the west, are continuing clean-up efforts to reopen.
Pam Young, owner of Sense of Charm, said Monday it has been a slow process.

“We do not anticipate opening this week,” Young said, adding crews are still removing smoke and water damage from her business and there’s still uncertainty about inventory. And because of the heat from the fire, her building also will need a new roof, she said.

Pott County Bookstore also remains closed, but owner Terry Webb said they are serving most of their regular business customers with office supply reorders by phone, fax or internet.

“People can still call and place orders; we’re just not in the retail business,” he said.

The store’s basement had several feet of water to pump out and crews are removing the basement carpeting, along with much of the main floor carpeting.

While it’s been a mess to clean up, Webb said things could be much worse.

“We’d like to thank everybody for their concern,” Webb said. “We’re really proud and thankful for our fire department — they did a great job.”
Webb said they still have a lot to do and will be in the  recovery mode over the next two weeks.

“We’re going to be alright,” he said.

Cause of the fire at Loco’s is undetermined, but an investigation is ongoing.
