The News 9 helicopter that landed on the football practice field Friday didn’t come to report on the happenings at Shawnee High School but rather to reward SHS for its tradition of spirit.
Channel 9 News selects one school every week to receive the spirit award.
After every game, News 9 reporters meet to select the school with the most spirited for the week.
Shawnee’s consistent displays of spirit at games this year put it in the running for the honor. The football team’s undefeated record and high prospects for the rest of the season were also cited as reasons to be awarded the Spirit Stick.
A pep rally was held to celebrate the award. As well as having the band and drumline perform, the cheer, pom and color guard helped provide spirit for the event. The school attended as a large display of school pride. Additionally, students from Jefferson Elementary were present.
The spirit stick has brought a renewed sense of pride and school spirit to the school, ranging from the athletes to the cheer and pom squads to the fans. Quarterback Brett Davis said the award is an “honorable experience showcasing pure high school football.”
Every school that has the spirit stick is responsible for adding something to it showcasing that school’s spirit. The most popular idea for decorating the spirit stick is placing a wolf head on it in honor of the SHS mascot.
