As a Shawnee family prepares for an awareness walk for a condition from which one of its younger members suffers, the family also prepares for that member’s surgery a few days afterward.
When Gov. Brad Henry proclaimed November 2009 as Chiari Awareness Month for Oklahoma, he had no way of knowing the timing of the proclamation and the surgery for 3-year-old Jaden Clutter would be in the same month.
It was originally believed by Jaden’s parents, Shane Clutter and LeeAnn Thompson, that the surgery would be performed later, possibly in December.
The family recently learned Jaden’s surgery will be much sooner, Nov. 11, just four days after the Jaden’s Stand Against Chiari Awareness Walk is held.
Registration, which costs $15 and includes a commemorative T-shirt, begins at 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at Shawnee Mall.
Donations to help the family pay for medical expenses not covered by insurance and to help bring greater awareness of Chiari Malformation to the area, may be given to Jaden’s organization at MidFirst Bank in Shawnee or any other MidFirst Bank location. For more information, call 214-0903 or e-mail tabsandoval@aol.com.
