Shawnee city commissioners moved a bit closer Monday to seeing Kickapoo Street widened after approving “resolutions of necessity for acquisition of parcels ... by either purchase or condemnation.”
The move, according to City Attorney John Canavan, is the “first legal proceeding for condemnations” in the acquisition process.
Canavan spent the past five or more weeks attempting negotiations to acquire the portions of land needed for the paving project, John Krywicki, city engineer, said.
“There are 17 parcels that need acquired with 12 owners of those parcels,” Krywicki said. “The city attorney continues to pursue those parcels on the agenda.”
If the right of way for the parcels is quickly obtained, the work to relocate utilities along the roadway can begin, he said.
“We have to have the right of way or right of entry secured before they can begin to move the utilities,” he said. “After those are secured, it will take about four to six months to relocate the utilities.”
Krywicki said he is hopeful the acquisitions will be complete by the first or second week of February.
