While interning at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Daniel Lay was encouraged to become connected with the Oklahoma Museums Association.
The connection has proven valuable for Lay, an Oklahoma Baptist University senior from Boise City who recently earned a scholarship from the association.
Lay applied for a scholarship to attend the Oklahoma Museums Association’s Annual Fall Conference Sept. 24-26 in Bartlesville.
The association later notified him that he received the scholarship and would be attending the conference, hosted by seven museums.
At the conference, Lay will be paired up with a mentor who will give him insight into the museum field.
Lay also will attend numerous workshops and lectures as well as a networking luncheon.
“It gives me a chance to connect with museum professionals,” Lay said.
Lay interns at the Pottawatomie Cultural Heritage Center and is employed at the Mabee Gerrer Museum of Art at St. Gregory’s University, both in Shawnee.
After graduating in spring 2009, he said he hopes to work in the museum field using his degree in electronic media production.
“I think working in a museum is the best application of my liberal arts education,” Lay said. “I’m using the things I learned in Western Civilization, humanities, and New and Old Testament classes.”
With more than 420 members, the Oklahoma Museums Association supports Oklahoma museums in their efforts to educate, inform and entertain.
