SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Today
The second of three tree planting sessions for persons who ordered from the Oklahoma Tree Bank/Apache Foundation will be 2:15 p.m. at the Shawnee Public Library. Another meeting will be at 2:15 p.m. Oct. 18.  The meeting will last about 30 minutes.

Monday
The Pottawatomie County BPW’s October meeting will be at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Shawnee.  Business meeting will start at 6:15 p.m. with guest speaker Dora D. Obuobisa, artist in residence with the Oklahoma Arts Council. Obuobisa’s topic is business women in Ghana. A native of Ghana, Obuobisa is skilled in leatherwork, batik and other traditional African crafts. She will teach basketweaving at the meeting. The executive board of the Pottawatomie County Retired Educators will meet at 2 p.m. at the Shawnee Senior Center, 401 N. Bell.

Pottawatomie County Genealogy Club meets 6 p.m. in suite 440 of the Masonic Office Building, Ninth and Bell streets. Dr. Sam and Ginnie Connata will share their 30-plus years of experience in medical missionary work in Africa. Members and visitors are invited to attend and hear about hunting water buffalo, treating natives and how Dr. Connata lost one eye while detained as an American spy.

Because of the Columbus Day holiday, the OSU Extension Nutrition will not meet in the Shawnee Senior Center.

Mary’s Diabetic Foot Clinic and Paraffin Treatment will offer foot examinations and care for diabetic seniors from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shawnee Senior Center, 401 M. Bell. It is open to anyone age 50 and older. For more information, call 878-1528.

Tuesday
The Zeta Gamma chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha will meet at 7 p.m. in the home of Michelle McKnight. Lora Thompson will lead the business meeting.

The regular monthly meeting of the Senior Citizens of Shawnee Inc. board of directors is 9:30 a.m. in Craft Room 2 of the Shawnee Senior Center. It is open to the public.  For more information, call the Shawnee Senior Center, 878-1528.

Kappa Kappa Iota will meet at Billy Boy Bar-B-Que at 4 p.m. The organization’s project for October is donations to Project Gabriel. After dinner, the group will visit the Our Field of Dreams alpaca farm east of Shawnee.

A gospel singing will be held 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the WP Wood Room of the Shawnee Senior Center. It is open to the public. For more information, call the Shawnee Senior Center, 878-1528.
 
Cool Collar Crew meets 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shawnee Senior Center in Craft Room 1.  This group of volunteers makes cool collars for troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. New members and beginners are welcome. For more information, call 878-1528.
 
Storytime Band performs country and western music from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shawnee Senior Center, 401 N. Bell.  Open to all citizens 50 years of age and older, to listen and dance to county music. For more information, call 878-1528.

Wednesday
The Pottawatomie County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet 2 p.m. at the Shawnee Expo Center.

The Individual Artists of Oklahoma (IAO) will hold an open-mike poetry reading 7 p.m. at Benedict Street Marketplace, 613 N. Pottenger. Nathan Brown, a poet from Norman, will be the featured reader.

Sooner Home Health will provide a “mini health check” from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Shawnee Senior Center, 401 N. Bell. The check includes blood pressure, temperature, pulse and weight (not mandatory). It is open to anyone age 50 and older.
 
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program advisory board meeting will be held in Craft Room 2 of the Shawnee Senior Center at 401 N. Bell.  For more information, call 275-7910.
 
National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) meets in the WP Wood Room of the Shawnee Senior Center, 401 N. Bell, on the third Wednesday of each month.

Thursday
Diamond K Kiwanis meets 8:30 a.m. in the WP Wood Room at Shawnee Senior Center, 401 N. Bell. Chris Rick will talk about the Mabee Gerrer Museum. It is open to the public.

A Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure Clinic, sponsored by Doctor’s Park Home Health, will be held 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Craft Room 2 of the Shawnee Senior Center, 401 N. Bell.
