A child who was accidentally struck by a vehicle as he walked home from Jefferson School Thursday was treated for a broken leg and then released from the hospital that night.
According to a police report, the accident occurred on Louisa near Kirk Street.
The child, Landen Chase Degman, 7, was walking on the west side of Louisa Street with his grandfather when they decided to start running.
Shawnee Police Officer Jason Crouch, who worked the accident, said that’s when the child ran across the street and into the path of a vehicle.
“He didn’t see the car and the [driver of the] car didn’t see him,” Crouch said.
Degman was hit by a 2002 Hyundai driven at low-speed by Shawnee resident Linda Fay Melin, 67. The officer’s report shows there was no improper action by the driver.
Upon impact, the child was dragged about 8.2 feet, the report shows. Degman was transported by REACT EMS ambulance to Unity Health Center, North Campus, then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma City, where he was treated for his broken leg and at foot injury.
