City, and state road projects are moving along in Shawnee. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s Harrison Street project is in the final stages, work on the mall turning lane has started and Kickapoo has taken a step forward.
Shawnee has now obtained right-of-way easements on all but one property along Kickapoo, and utilities relocations along the stretch are more than 75 percent complete.
“We now have right-of-way easements on all but one property,” Mary Ann Kerns, Shawnee’s city attorney said. “We have also paid out on all but one. We should have complete right-of-way by mid-September or early October.”
The remaining property is a Sinclair gas station, and only one out of the original 80 easements was settled by a jury trial.
“We are almost nearly done,” Kerns said.
ODOT has plans to let the Kickapoo project for bid in November.
• The other area ODOT project, the Harrison Street milling and overlay maintenance project, only requires lane painting.
According to Shawnee staff activity reports, Harrison Street was restriped to five lanes, north of MacArthur to include a continuous “left turn only” lane down the center of the road. The existing street width south of MacArthur is too narrow to restripe for five lanes. The city’s sidewalk/ramp contractor will begin replacing/rebuilding sidewalk ramps at locations where there are sidewalks and no ramps, and at locations where there are sidewalks and ramps, but the ramps are not ADA compliant.
• The rehab asphalt street maintenance project began Monday, crews began working on roads near Shawnee Twin Lakes, and will work their way into the city.
• City engineer John Krywicki plans to advertise the Beard Street widening project Wednesday, with the scheduled bid opening for Aug. 15, at the city commission meeting. “We are going to advertise this week,” Krywicki said.
Krywicki said OG&E had yet to relocate six poles that need to be moved. In April, 2011, OG&E indicated their work would be completed by June 21. OG&E has sent notice to the city they will not be onsite until Aug. 1.
• The $248,444, mall turning lane project began July 11. The contractor and city will stage construction operations to minimize inconvenience to the traveling public, and to the patrons of Wendy’s, Aaron’s Rentals and KFC in the immediate vicinity of construction.
