The Shawnee Municipal Authority, as instructed by city commissioners, will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. at the Shawnee Community Center, 804 S. Park, to discuss the city’s solid waste removal contract.
The issue has been one of continuing concern for both city leaders and the public for quite some time.
Among the items expected to be discussed during the hearing is what options are available for bulk waste pick up and removal.
Commissioners said the intent of the meeting is to provide them with a good sense of what the citizens, who are those most affected by the city’s solid waste removal contracts, want to see changed or remain the same when the city considers bids for a new contract.
Vice Mayor Pam Stephens said several times during past commissioners meetings that knowing what items are considered priorities to the citizenry will help commissioners and city staff in their selection of the winning bid.
The bidding process will be open to several potential service providers, including Allied Waste, which is the company with whom the city currently holds a contract for its waste removal services.
The commission, in October 2009, authorized city staff to request proposals for the solid waste disposal services for the fiscal year 2010-2011.
