U.S. Army Lt. Col. Shannon G. Pool, son of Louie Joe and Carole Pool of Shawnee, is currently assigned as commander of the 3-407th Army Field Support Battalion in Fort Riley, Kan.
Pool’s battalion is responsible for providing direct support logistics to the 1st Infantry Division and its assigned units. The battalion strength is 742 personnel.
Pool was born in Shawnee and attended school in Tecumseh. After graduating from high school in 1983, he attended East Central State University in Ada, and graduated as an ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate with a degree in education.
Pool was immediately commissioned and attended the Air Defense Artillery Basic Course at Fort Bliss, Texas. After graduating the from course, his first duty assignment was Fort Carson, Colo. While stationed there, he served in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993.
In 1994, Pool attended the Combined Officer Logistics Advanced Course at Fort Lee, Va. He then served as the assistant MATO for the 19th Maintenance Battalion and commanded the 226th Company at Fort Sill.
Following command, Pool attended the CAS3 at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and accepted a second command in Brooklyn, N.Y., as a recruiting company commander. After changing command, he served in Stuttgart, Germany, as the commandant’s executive officer.
After attending and graduating Command General Staff College, Pool was assigned to Fort Riley, Kan.
In July 2003, while deployed to Iraq, Pool was assigned to the 125th Forward Support Battalion as the support operations officer. After serving one year in Iraq, Pool took over as the executive officer of the battalion.
The battalion was redeployed to Iraq in nine months, and Pool completed his second tour there in February 2006.
Pool is married to Wanette native Karen Ely. They have two daughters: Sara, 12, and Gracie, 7.
Pool has three brothers, who live in the Shawnee area with their families. They are Joe Pool, Shawnee; Chris Pool, Pauls Valley; and Mark Pool, Newalla.
