The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is teaming up with the Salvation Army and regional artists in the fight against hunger.
This year, the MGMoA Regional Art Exhibit has taken on a new theme: Doing What We CAN to Help. Artists from Shawnee, Oklahoma City and the surrounding communities have created artworks that reference canned foods, including artworks created on cans or from can materials, or artworks that include representations of cans.
During the run of the exhibition, Nov. 6 through 22, the museum is waiving the admission fee for each visitor donating one canned food item. All of the food items will be given to the Shawnee Salvation Army in time to help feed needy families during the holiday season.
Doing What We CAN to Help opens on Friday, Nov. 6, with a reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. hosted by the MGMoA Volunteers. The opening is free and open to the public, but the museum is encouraging visitors to bring canned goods to the opening in order to kick off the food drive.
“There is a wide range of style and mediums represented in the art. It is a very fun way to help out the community in this holiday season,” said Dane Pollei, director of the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art.
