St. Gregory’s University Theatre continues its season this week with “Crusades,” a contemporary piece by internationally acclaimed playwright Michel Azama.
The production opens Thursday and runs through Sunday at the Sarkeys Performing Arts Center. The first three nights of the performance will begin at 8 p.m., while Sunday’s finale will start at 3 p.m.
Written in 1989, “Crusades” explores different eras of history, from the Children’s Crusades to the modern conflicts between Israel and Palestine. Influenced by Epic Theatre, Azama creates a world where time and location have no boundaries. The characters are archetypes, navigating between the living and the dead, and speaking in poetic language.
Fabrice Conte, assistant professor of theatre at SGU, said the show “embraces the aesthetic of experimental theatre, and presents an exciting lighting design and innovative projections.” Conte also directed the play at the University of Oklahoma.
“There are no villains or heroes in this play, no moral examples or condemnation,” Conte said. “’Crusades’ offers questions about war, life and faith.”
Admission is $6 for non-SGU students and $10 for adults. Tickets go on sale one hour prior to each performance at the theatre box office located in the theatre lobby. The show contains strong language and adult themes and may not be suitable for everyone. The play runs an hour and 15 minutes without an intermission.
The Sarkeys Performing Arts Center is located at 1900 W. MacArthur on the campus of St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee. For more information, call 405-878-5436 or go to www.stgregorys.edu and click on the “Fine Arts” tab.
