Shawnee city commissioners Tuesday voted to increase daily hunting and fishing fees at the Shawnee Twin Lakes during their first meeting of the year.
The fees will not increase by much more than 50 cents and were increased to make hunting and fishing permits cost an even dollar amount, James Bryce, Shawnee director of operations, said.
The fees will help reduce the cost of planned digital payment kiosks the city is looking to install at the lakes.
“It would be cheaper to get the kiosks if they did not give change,” Bryce said.
The kiosks would stand alone at the twin lakes and would have cash and credit card payment options.
Commissioners also approved the Shawnee Civic and Cultural Development Authority’s recommendation to award electrical bids for 50 amp upgrades at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. The bid process has recently been in question because only two companies bid on the projects and with one there was a price discrepancy of about $200,000. It was later determined that the lower bid did not meet the specifications and the bid was awarded to Shawnee Electrical.
“I want to save the money but I want to do it right,” Commissioner Steve Smith said.
The vote was unanimously approved and the project is expected to be completed in time for the International Finals Youth Rodeo in July, which was a priority for the commissioners.
Commissioners also deferred action on the annexation of property northwest of the intersection of MacArthur Street and Acme Road. The applicant is the Kickapoo Tribe. The agenda item was continued from the Dec. 16 meeting but will be reconvened during the Feb. 6 meeting.
