The 72nd annual Pottawatomie County Free Fair is scheduled and those wishing to enter their items in the local judging may sign up Sept. 8.
Those with entries in dairy or any non-livestock competition may sign up 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center for the fair, which will be held Sept. 9 through Sept. 11.
This year, the addition of honoring volunteers will be included in the fair events.
“We couldn’t have the fair without the volunteers,” Suzanne Gilbert, fair volunteer, said. “We have 39 volunteers with 10 or more consecutive years of volunteering and 20 of those have more than 20 years of consecutive volunteering and all of those are documented. Edd Barnes has been announcing the horse show for 52 years as a volunteer.”
Gilbert said the fair includes several activities for entire families and especially for children.
“It’s the best thing in town for family entertainment and it’s all free,” she said.
Among the activities for the whole family are the free team roping and barrel racing events, a garden tractor pull with “souped up riding lawnmowers” 7 p.m., Friday, various demonstrations and more, Gilbert said.
“And something different this year in the kids’ barnyard is that 4-H kids will be teaching about how to care for different animals,” she said.
The walk-through portion of the fair, as well as many ongoing events throughout its duration, are free but carnival games and rides due cost fairgoers, Gilbert said.
Other attractions include a Fetch-N-Fish display throughout the day each day with a large, see-through trailer that serves as a fish tank where fishing demonstrations are held; a Farmer-Rancher Appreciation Day; pee-wee pedal tractors; a Senior Day, which includes an apple peeling contest; and on Saturday, a Kiwanis Kids’ Day, with turtle races, stick horse races and a bubble gum blowing contest.
Posters from the fair poster contest, themed “There is Magic in the Fair,” will be displayed by the Children’s Barnyard.
A scarecrow contest will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 8 for non-profit organizations within the county, 4-H, FFA, scouts, civic groups, church groups and other similar individuals.
And there will be gospel singing available 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at the Otto Krausse Building.
