As most of the city of Shawnee’s non-union employees prepare for an unpaid three-day weekend, city officials have posted notices at City Hall that all offices there will be closed Friday, July 30.
The one-day closure is an effort by city management to cut expenditures in hopes of balancing the tight, 2010-11 fiscal year budget. Although June’s sales tax receipts made it appear the city might slowly be rebounding from a downward trend of decreasing sales tax revenue reports, July receipts came in below predicted numbers making the furlough day unavoidable.
Employees at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center, who also are non-union city employees, took their first furlough day a week earlier than other employees, Mike Jackson, Expo operations manager, said.
“We took ours last Friday due to several events we have scheduled,” he said. “We will take ours as needed and work them around scheduled events. We just can’t have our employees off when we have planned events.”
Jackson said the Expo will be open July 30 since those employees already took a furlough day.
City Hall will re-open regular hours for business Monday, Aug. 2.
If sales tax receipts continue to slump, more furlough days will be necessary to avoid the need for layoffs of city employees.
