The fifth annual Kelsey Briggs Run Against Child Abuse hosted by the Kelsey Briggs Foundation was held Sept. 18 at Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City.
Events included a half marathon, which is 13.1 miles and a 5K run, which is 3.1 miles. A free one mile fun run/walk and a free kids’ 50 yard dash also were held.
The event was sanctioned and certified by the USATF (USA track and field).
Medals went to the top three winners in each age group for both the half marathon and the 5K, with the top female and male finishers for both events receiving prize money.
Katie Kramer of Oklahoma City was the top female finisher for the half marathon with a winning time of 1:29:14. The top male finisher of the half marathon was Adam Cohen of Norman with a time of 1:16:32.
The event had several booths set up for people who were not running. Jacob Gutierrez signed autographs, there was a certified massage therapist providing free massages to the runners and children were able to make their bookmarks with the help of a calligrapher.
This year marked a record breaking number of participants with more than 300 registrants and 268 finishers. The run raised money for the Kelsey Briggs Foundation based in Shawnee.
The foundation is working on several projects for the community and in May 2011 will give out the first Kelsey Briggs Memorial Scholarship to a high school senior who will be going into a field where they will be helping children. The foundation’s next event will be the annual Christmas toy drive, Toys for Kelsey’s Kids.
