Shawnee police arrested a local man Thursday morning after he allegedly fired several rounds in his house at 527 N. Chapman, with at least one round reportedly hitting the house next door. No injuries were reported.
Shawnee Police Cpl. Jon Arnett responded to the shots fired call about 8:29 a.m. and arrived to find a man inside the house walking around with a .22 caliber long rifle in one hand and a .22 caliber pistol in the other, a police report shows.
Arnett said the suspect came to the front door and walked onto the porch with both guns in hand. He ordered the man to drop both guns, the report said, but he stood there and did not comply until a second command was made.
Arnett and other officers on scene took the man into custody without incident. Arrested at the scene was John Edward Gaines, 41, the report said. Upon clearing the house for any other dangers, officers found four other guns inside and the report said both guns he had in hand were loaded.
Gaines’ reported girlfriend told officers at the scene that they had both been using methamphetamine and that she was going to leave him the night before but was scared.
She also told police that Gaines had been shooting the firearms inside the house. Police found several empty .22 casings in the home, as well as holes in the walls and floor, the report shows.
The girlfriend also told officers that Gaines allegedly shot two holes in a north window of the living room toward the house next door.
Police found holes in that window as well as a hole in front of the house next door.
Gaines was booked into the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center. While the police report shows complaints of domestic abuse and shooting into another dwelling, jail records showed he was being held on complaints of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and shooting with intent to kill.
Gaines was being held without bond Thursday and is scheduled for a bond hearing Friday.
Detectives responded to investigate the scene. Once complete, their case report will be turned over to the district attorney’s office for consideration of any formal charges being filed.
